Under first year head coach Nate Flack, the 2024 boys soccer season was a foundational season to build new culture, grow, and commit to excellence. The season kicked off with high ranking and difficult non-league games where the team achieved a 4-2-2 record heading into league sitting at #12 in the state. Throughout the season the boys program was consistently ranked in the top 20 in the state and gained a #19 seed going into the state tournament with a record of 7-5-3. Through the regular season sophomore Ben Hazlett led in the net with our three senior captains playing in the defensive line in front of him (Luke Johnson, Fritz Mezger, Ben Bartels). Our midfield was led with Gavin Fell, even battling through injuries most the season, at the helm with sophomore Luke Brust in assistance and defensive dominance. Freshman Marshall Foley, Maddox McClaugherty, and Ben O'Brien stepped up and played a vital role in this season's successes as young and exciting players. Senior Wyatt Emory led the season with 6 total goals scored and Rush LaSelle and Gavin Fell followed him up with 5. Our team's goals were spread across the team representing how we worked to play united and determined to propel the team over ourselves as individuals. Gavin Fell also led the team in assists with 7, followed up by freshman Marshall Foley with 5.
Heading into the state tournament the boys knocked off the #14 seed Vista PEAK in the first round and took the #3 seed Broomfield to double overtime ultimately losing 2-1.
The team's verse for the season was 1 John 4:18 - "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love." This verse embodies how we want to act, perform, and grow as a program. The love of Christ drives out all fear. Fear of failure, disappointment, mistakes on the field, insecurities. Despite all that, if we stand firm on who Christ is and accept his unconditional love, we can play soccer freely and live in freedom.
