Prior to the season, the prediction for Valor's hockey team was "a building year" based on last season's graduating class that had played such an important role in leading the Eagles to their 4th State Championship in six seasons.Â
As predicted, the team's start was slow (3 wins, 2 losses) as they underwent the struggles and growing pains of new players in unfamiliar roles. However, once the Eagles returned to the ice after Christmas break, the team took off and was one of the hottest teams in the state as they completed the regular season with a 15-3-1 record while grabbing the No. 2 seed in the CHSAA State Hockey Tournament.Â
A strong quarterfinal performance against No. 7 Monarch (2-0 win) moved Valor into a semifinal matchup with rival Cherry Creek, the No. 3 seed. After a hard fought and evenly played game, Cherry Creek prevailed with a 3-1 win.  Â
Throughout the season, Valor's offensive attack was built around senior forwardsÂ
Maddux Charles (18 goals + 20 assists for 40 points)
 and
Hoyt Sorensen (16 goals + 17 assists for 33 points).
Charles finished the season as the 3rd leading scorer in 5A whileÂ
Sorensen finished 7th.
When teams focused their defensive game plans around stopping those two, Valor relied on contributions from junior centerÂ
Gabe Fischer (10 goals + 14 assists for 24 points) and sophomore forwardÂ
Dawson Charles (10 goals + 14 assists for 24 points).Â
Defensively, the Eagles were led by juniorÂ
Jack Mykytiw (3 goals + 0 assists for 3 points) and sophomoreÂ
Roger Stanley (5 goals + 5 assist for 10 points). In goal, seniorÂ
Ryan Havekost (8 games played, .920 save percentage, 1.30 goals against average) and juniorÂ
Lucas Jordan (13 games played, .901 save percentage, 2.28 goals against average) shared the goaltending duties until the latter part of the schedule whenÂ
Jordan assumed the starter's role. Â
Ten seniors will graduate from the hockey program including forwardsÂ
Cayden Tarbert,Â
Evan Jimenez,Â
Hoyt Sorensen,Â
Maddux Charles,Â
Matteo Canepari, Max Sutter, defensemenÂ
Jackson King,Â
Julian Im,Â
Kane Coffey and goaltenderÂ
Ryan Havekost.  Â
Despite these losses, the future looks bright with the return of goaltenderÂ
Lucas Jordan, defensemenÂ
Connor Foy, Connor Gogel,Â
Jack Mykytiw,Â
Roger Stanley,Â
Jackson O'Donnell and forwardsÂ
Gabe Fischer,Â
Dawson Charles,Â
Bauer Bodhaine,Â
Joey Baker,Â
Carson Diep,Â
Jack Bevan andÂ
Ben Purchase.
Additionally, a talented group of players from this past season's JV team along with a strong group of incoming players will bolster Valor's lineup and challenge for playing time as they attempt another shot at the state title.
