Maddux Charles Propels Valor Past Monarch in 1-0 OT Thriller

On Saturday night, the No 3 Eagles took on No 2 Monarch Coyotes in the last game of four consecutive 4A and 5A semifinals games at Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs. The start of Valor's game was delayed by over an hour because the previous three games had all gone into overtime,

The delay didn't seem to bother Valor as they came out flying, out-shooting Monarch by an 11-5 margin in the period. Valor would've had a comfortable lead had it not been for the heroics of the Coyotes goaltender and so the score remained deadlocked at 0-0.

Monarch mounted some "push back" in the second period. Although their 15 shots on goal equaled Valor shots for the period, a majority of them shots were taken from the perimeter. Meanwhile, many of Valor shots on goal were attempts inside the prime scoring area. The score stayed at 0-0 after two periods.

Valor found another gear in the third period and dominated their fatiguing opponent, out-shooting them 18-5. Despite the incredible pressure put on him, Monarch's goaltender continued to bbe unbeatable as he turned away every Valor threat to keep the score 0-0 at the end of regulation.

It took the Eagles just 7 seconds into overtime to send the Valor faithful into a frenzy. Senior Drew Jenkins won the opening faceoff and advanced the puck off the wall into the Monarch zone. Junior Maddux Charles won the race for the puck against a Coyotes defenseman. From below the end zone faceoff dot, Charles fired a missile over the Monarch goaltender's shoulder for the game winner.

Sophomore goaltender Lucas Jordan had another strong outing for Valor turning aside 23 shots for the 1-0 shutout win. Valor out shot Monarch 46 - 23 including a dominant 17 - 4 in scoring chances.

In the earlier 5A semifinal game, No 1 Poudre School District Stars - formerly known as Fort Collins High School Lambkins - beat No 4 Cherry Creek 4-3 in double OT to advance to the State final game.

The State Championship game is set for 7:30 pm on Monday night at the University of Denver's Magness Arena.
